Heatwave: Some tips for trying to survive in the city!
Share
In the middle of summer, the heatwave can make life in the city stifling. But don't panic, even if you don't have a water point nearby to cool off or aren't able to move around, you can still cope with the heat while remaining eco-responsible.
1. Ecological Refreshment 💧
If drinking water from the tap is a problem, invest in a portable water filter so you always have fresh, clean water on hand. Avoid plastic water bottles, which are not only expensive but also bad for the environment.
2. Shaded Creativity 🌳
Find shady places to relax outdoors. Parks, public gardens and courtyards are great places to escape the heat. Bring a picnic rug, a good book, and enjoy the coolness under the trees. If this is not possible, close the curtains or shutters in your home during the hottest hours to protect yourself from the sun's rays. At this rate we will end up turning into a mole...!
3. Intelligent Ventilation 💨
At home, use ceiling fans or portable fans to create pleasant airflow. You can also hang damp sheets in front of windows for natural passive cooling. Air conditioners are convenient, but be careful not to overuse them to reduce your carbon footprint. The polar bears will thank you ;)
4. Light and Local Meals 🍅
Opt for light meals using local and seasonal ingredients. Fresh salads, fruits, and vegetables are not only refreshing, but also good for the planet by reducing greenhouse gas emissions linked to food transportation.
5. Express Showers 🚿
When you take a shower, try to keep it short and cool. This saves water and energy. If possible, collect the cold flowing water before it becomes hot and use it to water your plants or for cleaning your daily chores.
6. Eco-Friendly Transport 🚲
Opt for eco-responsible modes of transport such as cycling, shared electric scooters or public transport. Not only will you help reduce urban heat, but you will also reduce air pollution.
NB: this is valid for people without contraindications. Don't go running a marathon in the middle of a heatwave if you have a heart condition, for example!
7. Rainwater Harvesting 🌧️
If allowed in your area, consider installing a rainwater harvesting system to water your plants and garden. It is an eco-friendly solution to save precious water.
8. Support Green Spaces 🌱
Encourage your city to invest in more green spaces and trees to alleviate urban heat. Participate in tree planting initiatives in your neighborhood to make your city cooler and greener.
The heatwave in the city can be a challenge, but with these eco-friendly habits, you can continue to preserve the planet. 🌿🏙️
On that note, GOOD LUCK ;)
